Instagram, Facebook Users Harsh Critics of Trump on Greenland
5 days
The Roll Up: January 20, 2026
TL;DR: Rolli IQ now has access to search Meta platforms Instagram, Facebook and Threads, as well as China's Weibo. Searches on the Meta platforms show Donald Trump's desires to seize or buy Greenland are immensely unpopular among user on Facebook and Instagram, contrasting with a smattering of support he's seeing on Twitter/X.
Trump's talk of obtaining Greenland goes back to his first term, during which he said it would be a good idea for the United States to buy the island. The comment was taken as odd at the time, with the Danish prime minister called it "an absurd discussion." But Trump was back on Greenland as president-elect even before his second term began. Since taking office, Trump has sent several delegations to Greenland and stepped up the rhetoric to obtain the island--by force if necessary.
Rolli IQ, now with access to Meta social media platforms Facebook, Instagram and Threads, paints an interesting contrast when comparing the Meta platforms and their wide swath across the political spectrum with users on right-leaning Twitter/X. Looking first at Instagram (see figure below), which has increasingly become a place to share political views, only 1% of users there see the move to take Greenland as positive, with two-thirds of users interacting on this topic rating it as negative (Note: Rolli IQ currently counts mentions on Instagram as part of the Engagement number)
Rolli IQ's AI analysis of the sentiments sums up the extreme displeasure many users on Instagram have toward the idea of an American takeover of Greenland:
Instagram: The posts overwhelmingly reflect a negative sentiment toward President Trump's attempts to acquire Greenland. Many highlight international pushback from Greenland, Denmark, the EU, Russia, and others, emphasizing concerns about sovereignty, diplomatic tensions, and potential global instability. Several posts criticize Trump's approach as ego-driven, reckless, and damaging to alliances like NATO. Satirical and humorous content mocks the idea, while serious commentary warns of geopolitical risks and the undermining of democratic and diplomatic norms. Overall, the discourse portrays the Greenland acquisition effort as controversial, unwelcome, and fraught with negative consequences.
Users on Meta platform Facebook (see figure below) were almost identical with their assessment of the Greenland situation (it is worth noting that many posts by Instagram users are shared on Facebook and vice versa), again with just 1% of users commenting positively on the idea.
Rolli IQ's AI summary of Facebook sentiments reads similar to the Instagram analysis but featuring fewer posts with a mocking tone and more with serious concerns for global stability:
Facebook: The posts overwhelmingly express strong criticism and concern over President Donald Trump's aggressive and unconventional campaign to acquire Greenland. His threats to impose tariffs on European allies, linking his actions to not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize, and his disregard for longstanding alliances like NATO have sparked widespread condemnation from European leaders, U.S. politicians, and commentators. The situation is described as reckless, damaging to international relations, and potentially destabilizing global security. Many call for congressional intervention and warn of the risks of escalating trade wars and military tensions. Overall, the sentiment is highly negative, highlighting fears about Trump's leadership and its impact on U.S. foreign policy and global stability.
Contrast the almost unanimous opposition to a U.S. takeover of Greenland on those two Meta platforms with how the issue is being discussed on Twitter/X (see figure below). While negative sentiments are still coming from about two-thirds of posts, nearly 20 percent of posts and engagement find the idea worth considering.
Once again using Rolli IQ's AI summary of sentiments, this time on Twitter/X, shows the same negative feelings as seen on the other platforms, but also support for the move as a way to safeguard U.S. security and national interests:
Twitter/X: The posts reflect a highly polarized and contentious debate surrounding President Trump's attempt to acquire Greenland. Many criticize Trump for damaging U.S. alliances, imposing tariffs on NATO allies, and risking diplomatic and economic fallout, with some warning that any military action could end his presidency. European leaders and NATO countries are depicted as opposing the move, with some deploying troops to Greenland and threatening retaliatory measures. Conversely, a faction supports Trump, praising his strategic approach and framing the move as a necessary geopolitical action for U.S. national security. The discourse includes humor, sarcasm, and strong political opinions, highlighting deep divisions over the issue.
Using the new Meta search capabilities on Rolli IQ to explore social media sentiment on the Greenland debate supports notings of the political divide between platforms that has arisen since Elon Musk's purchase of Twitter in 2022 and the exodus of moderate and progressive users there since Musk's takeover of the platform.
